Time to Start Again...?

OK, I need some inspiration... I need to knit!

A lot has happened since my last post so I'll write a small update. We sold the house that I built the apartment in over the summer so I'm temporarily living in a rental home until I can find another apartment that suits the kids and I perfectly. Although it broke my heart to let the house I grew up in go, it's a fresh start and we're all embracing it. Victor is already in Kindergarden and Ella will be starting Preschool on the 11th this month. I'm working everyday now and time is scarce. I'm also hoping to open up a business after the new year so my mind is cluttered with to-do's and research.

With all that said I really want nothing more then to sit down and start knitting again, maybe even some new pattern writing. Ellie had asked for a sweater last month and promising her that I would, I haven't even browsed patterns yet.

If anyone has recently knitted something for a little girl or seen a pattern lately that you think she might love please leave a comment with a link! She's very vintage and only wears dresses, cardigans, flats and headbands. Getting this girl in jeans with Winter around the corner is a battle in itself. Thank you for your help, I can't wait to get something on my needles. Which is more like, I can't wait to unpack all the boxes that say "YARN"!

Our New Addition..

Meet Lily! She's a Frenchie and was adopted by us early this month from a wonderful breeder, Big Creek Kennels. Lily has made our house a lot of fun. The kids are crazy over her and I am very lucky to have such a good pup. We're going through the long process of housebreaking at the moment. With the mountains of snow outside I'm longing for the days when I can take her outside to play and train. She's about 12 weeks now.

I wanted to say thank you to every single knitter who has ever bought a pattern from KrisKnits. I can't express how grateful I am and how much it helps us everyday. Sometimes life is just too much to handle and I'm trying to work on my time management between the kids, work and taking care of the house.

I've taken on so much by myself this past year. It's getting easier as the days go on and it truly breaks my heart that I cant seem to find the time for this blog or to keep writing patterns.. I wish I could finish every pattern or idea that I've started or sketched out lately but I'm missing yarn and needles to boot. I think an inventory is well overdue this week.

I'm going to try something a little different this year. Yes, January might be over already but I think if I can motivate myself to post at least one picture a day of my life from now on, then it will push me to start designing again. Being more active on this site and communicating with other knitters helps me as well. I also feel that documenting this year will help me in the long run to have more strength as a single mother. I'm so grateful for this community and for all of my friends who've stuck by my side at the hardest times. I'm not giving up on this site or the artist in my heart.

October Mystery Cloth is Here!

Happy Autumn everyone! I've been so busy this month between work and birthday parties it was too difficult to get everything on the computer. I did manage to finish an October KAL and I've decided to offer it as a Mystery Cloth Pattern. I hope everyone enjoys this knit, it was a lot of fun to design and write up. I used a dark purple yarn for my cloth but I would also suggest hues in green, blue, brown, red and orange.

I'm Back.. For Good.

It's been a very, very difficult summer. Due to family situations I had to start working full time and then some just to make ends meet. This took a severe toll on so many different aspects of my life. Thinking of them now can almost make me break down and cry. I'm still working through these difficult times everyday with an open heart and a smile . "When life gives you lemons..."

It's been so hard to neglect this part of my life for all of these months. It's honestly made me very depressed. I don't know where to even begin to apologize to every single one of you who follow this blog and wondered where I might be, if I was alright or not. Or to every knitter who might've had a problem with a pattern and sent an email that I just wasn't able to get to. Sometimes life becomes too much to handle and that's exactly what happened. I had no choice but to let some things suffer. There is more to the story but I beg you to forgive us and hope that you will continue to read and follow as I have so much to share with you.

Just a side note... and an important one. I am determined to continue the KAL and offer all of the "back-issue" cloths up in full within the next month. I know a lot of knitters wanted to have a complete set of 12 months by the end of the year. I'm making sure that this will be possible.

There will be an October KAL on the 1st of the month.

I need to start this again, I didn't realize how much joy it brought into my life an other's until it was gone. I've surely missed you..

Did Someone Say Fudge?

I made this for the family last week and it was such a huge hit. I don't think there could ever be too much of this to go around. I found this recipe in one of my Mother's filing cabinets and it brought back great memories. It was always a wonderful treat. Staying true to the recipe it was as delicious and addicting as I could remember.

Oreo Cream Fudge:

Prep Time: 15 min
Cook/Set Time: 1 ½ hours
Yields: 60 servings

Ingredients:

13x9" pan and enough foil to line
2 cups sugar
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow fluff
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup butter
2 cups white chocolate chips
½ cup Oreo cookies, finely crushed
1 cup Oreo cookies, crumbled

Directions:

Line 13x9" pan with foil and butter the foil.
Combine sugar, butter, milk in medium saucepan over medium high heat.
Bring mixture to a full rolling boil; stirring constantly. Boil for 3 minutes and remove from heat.
Stir in white chocolate morsels, marshmallow cream, finely crushed cookies, and vanilla until melted and well blended.
Pour evenly into prepared pan.
Sprinkle crumbled Oreos over hot mixture and lightly press down or gently swirl into fudge with knife if desired.
Refrigerate until firm. Lift foil from pan and remove from fudge. Cut fudge into squares.

Kitten's and Cloth's...

We adopted two beautiful male kittens this month and they've made our family so happy. They have such wonderful personalities and although they aren't brothers you would never know it by the way they play and cuddle up next to each other. Already getting into my very visible yarn stash around the house I've had to resort to putting everything back into the plastic bins I moved in with.

Victor and Ella named our brown tabby "Baby Jaguar" after their favorite cartoon and I named our fluffy gray kitten "Gabriel" because he is as sweet as an angel.

I've been working on getting the Flower Set of cloths ready to publish by Monday so that's where my free time has been going this week. Here's a preview of the colors I chose.

Saturday Afternoon Cookies...

Cookies are my absolute favorite treat. For me, making them is half the fun. Here's a simple cookie recipe that just about anyone can squeeze into the weekend. It's one of my family's favorites and they are so delicious!

Sugar and Chocolate Sandwich Cookies:

Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 15 - 25 min
Yields: 20 Sandwich Cookies

Ingredients:

5 oz unsalted butter
4 oz generous 1/2 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
1 cup generous all purpose flour
2 oz semisweet chocolate broken into pieces
2 tbsp confectioners' sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk, then the flour. Continue beating until well mixed.
Shape dough into a mound and break off walnut sized pieces rolling them into little balls with the palm of your hands. Place them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet spacing them 2" apart for expansion during cooking. Slightly press down the balls of dough.
Bake in preheated oven, 325 F/160 C, for 15 - 25 minutes. Cooke time will vary with different ovens, watch for slight browning on edges.
Carefully transfer cookies on parchment paper to wire racks to cool completely.
Place the semisweet chocolate in a small heatproof bowl and set over pan of barely simmering water, stirring constantly until melted. Remove bowl from heat
Remove the cookies from the parchment and spread the melted chocolate on the bases and sandwich another cookie on top. Return assembled cookie to wire rack and dust with confectioners' sugar.
Add some melted chocolate to a sandwich bag with a spoon and cut off one of the bottom tips to drizzle chocolate over the tops. Cool completely and serve.

Sometimes when life catches up to you it becomes overwhelming. I tried to overwork myself these past few weeks but it was impossible to find the time for anything design related. Thank you everyone for being patient for this KAL. I'm in love with this pattern! Victor and Ella both helped me design this month's cloth and they are so proud of it. I'm sure you will love it just as much!

We went out the other morning and gathered all the dandelions we could find around our house. Our lovely bouquet lasted only a few days but it did brighten us up during the Spring rains yesterday.

Happy Easter!...

Happy Easter everyone! We had so much fun yesterday at the party and I have lots of pictures to share. I haven't moved them over from my camera yet but I will tomorrow night after I take more easter shots. I'm going to post the last update for the March cloth at the bottom. Monday will start the April Mystery Cloth KAL. I haven't decided yet but I'm going to use either a soft blue, green or grey cotton yarn to knit mine.

We made these Easter eggs on Thursday and I'm so proud how they came out. I used water-proof stickers and masking tape to create the effects of the stenciled and plaid eggs. It turned out to be a very easy method and wasn't messy at all. After the eggs were dyed I used an X-Acto knife to pull up the stickers so I wouldn't smudge the colors.

This is a picture of what my kitchen looked like the night before the party. I had my girlfriend come over and we ended up baking the night away. I love the rushed atmosphere when getting ready for a party, I just wish there were more excuses to have one.

I don't really know what happened this week. I think Spring got the better of me, as did my kids and the knitting. Oh my the knitting! My fingers are flying trying to get patterns ready to be published. I truly love how one collection of patterns in particular are knitting up and I can't wait to show you once they're finished. They aren't dishcloths but are still cotton made and adorable as ever. Thank you everyone for your concern this week, it means a lot to me. I have too many creative thoughts running through my mind to stay away for too long.

I should be back on track with the updates for this week so we can all finish our cloths by Sunday. We're having a huge Easter party at our house this Friday with friends and family so I should have a lot to write about over the next few days.

March Mystery KAL...

It's.. adorable. I hope everyone enjoys this months mystery cloth. My Mother had a hand in helping me sketch out a design so I'm going to give her most of the credit here. I have the entire pattern written out and ready to go for updates every two or three days. There will be six posts in all until the end of the month so we will be able to start April's on the first! It feels great to finally catch up on everything that I've let slide for awhile.

The kids wanted to make some rice crispy treat Easter eggs the other night and they were fantastic. They only took about 5 minutes to make and another 10 to decorate. We're having an Easter party in a few weeks and I'm definitely making these again, there was almost no cleanup. We dipped them in chocolate and then frosted with icing and sprinkles.

I'm still working on the Flower set of washcloths and they're almost ready to be published for Spring. This weekend I'm going to attack my overflowing inbox of emails and answer everything. I really don't like leaving things for too long.

Cupcakes & Updates...

My Ella loves to bake. She practically lives in my kitchen helping me with everything. The kids have been begging me to make some cupcakes since we moved. I finally gave in and bought some new baking ingredients this weekend. It was great to use the new oven and decorate the little cakes for spring.

It's been another exhausting but exciting week over here and I'm starting to relax more. All of the boxes are finally gone and everything is organized. I've been working on a Flower Set of cloths for Spring and another special collection of patterns that I really need to dedicate some time to. I'd love to be able to post up a preview of them next week.

Losing an hour this morning has truly taken its toll on us. I'm sure it was the same for a lot of families. I must remember to change the time on the range and the microwave before bed!

This is the last update for the February Mystery KAL. I won't have time to write out the instructions for March's cloth until tomorrow afternoon but I have the design saved and ready to go. Patiently Waiting for Spring...

I'm finally sitting down tonight for the first time in what feels like days. Hopefully everyone isn't too upset with me for the lack of posts with KAL updates. I've been reading all of the wonderful comments on here through my phone when I don't have time to turn on the laptop. I cannot express how grateful I am to hear from everyone. Thank you for taking the time to let me know that you're enjoying the knit and that it's alright to take some family time during the move. It all means so much to me.

I have one more update to post before the weekend when the March Mystery Cloth KAL will start. I'll try to have the update up before Friday night. I'm sorry it's been so long since the last post. Every day has been extremely long and exhausting and I haven't had the energy to turn my laptop on in over a week. So I've been without Internet for over a week now and I apologize. We're living out of boxes and I still haven't moved everything over yet. I'm also slowly building furniture here and there and starting to organize our lives again. Throw in a stomach flu and ear infections, I'm sure you can imagine the week we've been having. Everyone is feeling better and we finally went out this morning to play in the snow. It was a nice break from being cooped up in the house for days.

As soon as I locate my camera's battery charger from whichever box it's hiding in, I will take some shots of the finished January Cloth from the KAL and post up the entire pattern in a blog post. We're Exhausted...

I've never worked so hard on a project this size for this long! Our apartment is finally finished and it's beautiful. I'm looking forward to relaxing and already have most of our things packed to move. A number of good friends and myself have done all of the construction from the very start to finish an I'm very proud.

I've been meaning to post pictures of the murals that I've painted from the paint we picked out at Home Depot. From pictures I had drawn months ago each wall took about a day and a half to sketch and paint. It was a nice break from installing sheet rock and tiling. I just hope the kids keep the creativity to the magnetic chalkboard I built for them in the corner of their room and not on these walls!

I apologize deeply about the KAL this month. I've been spending so much time at the new place that each day was fading into the next. I hadn't realized how much time was going by. I'm going to post the remainder of the rows now and hope that everyone will catch up quickly. I'll be home tomorrow for a little r&r and will post up the first few rows of the February Mystery Cloth KAL by tomorrow night.
I wanted to thank everyone for knitting along and being patient and understanding during this time. It has truly been exhausting to take care of a family and physically build a home for us at the same time.

Home Depot Can Be Fun...

We ended up picking out colors for the apartment the other day. Though the process turned out to be much longer than I expected, we were there for almost 2 hours. Victor and Ella had a blast and helped me choose which three colors will be on each of their bedroom walls. I have to say thank you to the girl who helped us pick and mix the shades while entertaining my lil' ones. You were a life saver!

I guess I should explain the temporary lapse. It's a pretty good excuse and I'm quite happy about it. We've been over at the new apt everyday since last Wednesday getting things ready for us to move in next week! Such long days and lots of coffee but it will all be worth it soon.

Holiday Shots...

This is going to be a picture heavy post. I took some cute shots of the kids over the Holiday's. We had a great time on Christmas and they got everything they wanted from Santa. I can only wish that every year will be just as special. I feel truly blessed!

We have a big family and all of us come together at an uncle's house Christmas Eve. Santa Claus makes a special appearance around midnight to give each child one gift before leaving to bring other children their toys and then stop at our house before morning. My daughter was getting grumpy waiting up for him so she might not be too happy in the photos but I love that it's just her. Ella has some attitude if she's over tired!

I made snowflake sugar cookies from scratch that morning with the kids. I let them decorate for awhile but after noticing that none of the icing was making it onto the cookies I did take end up taking over. I think they ate half of them before leaving for the party.

Another Hobby Another Love...

For as long as I can remember I have always drawn on everything. Never having any formal training, it has always come naturally and been just for fun. My kids love to sit down and scribble with me in coloring books and finger paint toddler masterpieces. Sometimes if I have half a day I can start and finish a photograph that I've been asked to draw. Though I'm sure when the kids are in school soon I'll be able to find more time for my craft. I wanted to share a few pencil drawings that I've done. The family was done recently and the Staffordshire Terrier was done a few years ago.

In both photos the original photograph is on the top and my drawing is on the bottom.

For some knitting news the Dessert Cloths should be available on Thursday or Friday and I have so much knitting to show you it's ridiculous!

Thank you to everyone who has started the KAL! The more people we have the more fun it will be. It's also keeping me motivated to design more.

Let's Start A KAL!

I thought this would be a great way to start the new year and keep it creative! In case some of you aren't aware of what a Knit-Along is I'll post a few questions and answers.

How do I join the knit-along?
Anyone can join. It's as simple as picking up some yarn and needles and following sections of a pattern over a given month. Invite others to join, it's fun to knit together. You might want to follow this blog by clicking the button on the left or subscribing through bloglines so you get the new posts right away.

How often will you update?
I will post up 10 lines to the pattern about 6 times a month. Look for the KrisKnits KAL logo at the bottom of a blog post. There you will find a new part of the pattern.

What will we be making?
Every month will feature a new full sized 10x10" picture dishcloth that corresponds in theme to each month. At the end of each KAL you will have a beautiful cloth that you can use in your home or share with someone else.

How do I share photos of my progress?
There will be a pattern for every month on Ravelry to share your progress with others. I would love if everyone added a new project there so we can see how many of us are knitting together. I only ask that you do not post a picture of the cloth as your main photo for the project. It can be anything else. This way the design stays a mystery for those who wish to keep it that way.

Happy New Year everyone!
I wanted to make and share a washcloth pattern for '10. It's sized perfectly to wrap around a fragrant or hand-made soap bar. Holiday Pancakes..

I always make special pancakes for breakfast Christmas morning and after finding this easy recipe I couldn't wait to Friday to try it out. The kids actually ate their entire breakfast today. I wish you could smell how amazing these are.

Holiday Apple Pancakes:

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more as needed
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
2 large eggs at room temperature
1 1/4 cups milk at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more as needed
4 Macintosh or other small apples
Warm maple syrup, as an accompaniment if desired

Directions

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Set a wire rack on a baking sheet and place in the oven.

Whisk 1 3/4 cups flour, baking powder, the sugar, salt and nutmeg in a large bowl. In small bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk and vanilla extract. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a large well-seasoned cast-iron or non stick skillet over medium heat. Whisk the butter into the milk mixture. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry mixture, and whisk just long enough to make a thick batter, (if there are a few lumps that's okay).

Using a melon baler or an apple corer, peel and core the apples keeping them whole. Slice the apples crosswise to make 1/4-inch rounds or O's. Put some flour on a plate and dredge the apple slices until lightly coated, shaking off any excess flour.

In the same skillet over medium to medium-low heat, place 3 apple slices next to eachother in the skillet. Cook without turning until browned, about 60 seconds. Ladle about 2 tablespoons of the batter over each apple ring. Cook, until bubbles break the surface of the pancakes, and the undersides are golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add a nut-sized bit of butter to the skillet, as needed, and flip the pancakes, cook until golden on the underside, about 1 minute more.

Serve immediately or transfer to oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining apples and batter. This recipe can be found at FoodNetwork.com

Whipped Cream:

Ingredients:

1 cup of heavy whipping cream
2 teaspoons of granulated sugar

In stainless steel bowl that has been chilled add the cream and sugar and wisk until small peaks form in the whipped cream.

Glazed Pecans:

Add about 3 teaspoons of granulated sugar to skillet and add just enough water to wet the sugar, about 1 teaspoon. Heat the skillet over medium heat until sugar starts to bubble. Mix in 1/4 cup of pecans and and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Place pecans on wire rack to dry

I Wish I Could Live Here...

It's been so long since I last posted. The Holiday's are to blame I guess. I apologize to everyone who has written emails over the last month or so. I'm starting to catch up slowly and will answer everything before Christmas. The kids and I have been so busy decorating and getting ready for Friday. They can't wait to see what Santa is going to bring them. Last night we made a Gingerbread House that I wish I could live in...

It took a couple of hours between the assembly and decorating. Waiting for the sugar to set was the longest. The kids helped me pick out the different candies that covered the house. It definitely took some patience, especially while Ella was trying to eat everything.

I was attempting to get some patterns finished before Christmas but it's not looking good. There's just too much to do this week and I won't be able to knit as much as I'd like to. I also have good news that the construction on the apartment is almost finished and we will moving in a few weeks. It has taken forever but I'm thankful the year is ending on a happy note and we're all looking forward to a fresh new start in '10.

Bronx Zoo For A Day...

It's been so long since the last post and I apologize. Things have got the better of me lately. I even reinjured my eye at the beginning of this month. It turns out I am going to need surgery to correct the recurrent erosion on my right cornea. My doctors said that we may be able to postpone the procedure until after the holidays. I would'nt want to miss anything for the next month or so.

Ive been slowly working on many things lately and I'm going to be blogging more oftern now that I'm feeling better. I wanted to share some pictures from our family's trip to the Bronx Zoo a few weeks back. Victor and Ella have been obsessed with all the animals from the movie Madagascar 2. My son was so excited to see his friends that he watches all the time.

Thankfully it was very warm that day and we all had a wonderful time. We'll probably make another trip before it snows. I know this is a picture heavy post but my son is now telling me that I have to show everyone all of the animals. He likes to sit next to me when I blog and thinks of it as extra storytime.

I have lots more photos from Halloween, our day trip up to Salem and knitting.. So much knitting!. I'll try to get everything uploaded tomorrow to share this week. I'm also working on a new neckwarmer pattern that will look perfect on anyone for the holiday's.

Creepy Cloths 2..

Thankfully everyone is feeling much better. Of course I caught it last and I'm still recovering with a cough. Painted Walls...

There's been so much going on over here lately I don't even know where to start. As I type I'm waiting for chocolate pumpkin lollipops to finish chilling in the refrigerator so I can add the next color. I'm making about 50 of them for Ella's 2nd birthday party this weekend. We're having a pumpkin party on the 10th, which is actually my birthday as well and there's just too much to do. I even went to a local farm earlier this week and picked up about 30 small pumpkins for all of the children to carve. Weather permitting there will be lots of food and games. I have to start the goodie bags later tonight but I don't see that happening.

I wanted to share something with you that my kids have been begging me to paint for ages now. I've finally started the "Nemo Mural" on their playroom wall at Grandma's house.

I've had a blast sketching and painting on the walls. I'm just glad my Mother in law is as happy as I am to see the kids smile. It's been relaxing to just sit with them around me watching and helping me with the colors.

Victor is planning on having the entire cast on the wall and keeps telling me that I need to keep painting.

I guess what it comes down to is that I just can't seem to keep art out of my life for too long. I started this to take a short break from knitting while the family is in "party mode". But I feel it's time for a new set of cloths. Early next week Creepy Cloths "2" perhaps....? I need to find some delicious Halloween colors for these. I'll take pictures of all that I'm making for the birthday and share them. I'll be a baking nut on Friday I can promise that.

Painted Letters...

I'm sorry I haven't updated the blog in awhile. We've been busier than normal and most days I don't even have a chance to turn the computer on. I've made lots of progress on my current projects and will be posting pictures throughout this week. I finally ended up painting those wooden letters for Victor and Ella's room. I am so pleased with the way they turned out. Using only blue painters tape, acrylic paint and a few brushes they were done in no time.

Using a four shaded color scheme I gave every letter two coats of Anita's All Purpose Acrylic Craft Paint in 11001 White to start. When dried, I started taping sections off with the blue painters tape making sure that the edge to be painted was pressed down firmly. To make it go quicker I placed two sections of tape on each letter creating three empty areas to be painted. I painted each of these areas a different color. If you look closely you'll notice there are two sections of the same color in each letter. These are the areas where the tape was placed first. After a few coats in the three sections and some drying time, I then taped off the next two areas to be painted leaving some white on either side for the striped effect. For each letter the color that you paint these last two areas will always be the color you haven't used yet.

I made each written pattern with a corresponding chart for the dishcloth. From the sets that I've already made, I've managed to get about 2-2½ cloths out of one ball of Lily's Sugar'n Cream Solid Yarn. Though you can use any kitchen cotton you prefer.

I have to start and finish a baby shower gift by this upcoming Saturday. Still undecided on what I should knit for the baby girl. I wish I had enough time to design something elegant and original but that might have to wait until she's a teeny bit older. I won't post any pictures until after the shower because my girlfriend does check my blog regularly. I really want the item/s to be a surprise even though now she'll know that I'm knitting her something. If anyone has any suggestions I would gladly appreciate it. I guess the knitting is somewhat time sensitive. I can't obviously finish a whole blanket in two days. Though I have tried, it was horrible.

Another Blanket...?

When you have two babies your going to have to make two blankets. I woke up early this morning and started working on Ella's blanket before the kids got up. When Victor finally came into the living room he asked me when I was going to make him his "Birthday Blanket". My heart melted and I promised that I would make him one as well. After we all had breakfast he sat on my lap and we went through different patterns on Ravelry. He was so excited to see that they had a fish blanket. We had to run some errands today so I stopped by our local A.C. Moore and we picked out some big boy colors. At this point I wish I had a few extra hands to knit these things. I'm using a US size 6 and looking at 50+ knitted fishies.

I also saw these wooden letters that were on sale. They're about 5" high and couldn't pass them up. I know after I paint them they'll be perfect over the toddler beds.

I pulled out some of my mural paints and brushes when we got home. I had really forgotten how much I had. I haven't painted one in over a year an a half. Most of my brushes and paints came from an artist's garage sale. One of my luckiest finds, half of them have never been used.

The kids want me to paint them each a scene on their bedroom walls. Victor wants a whole Disney's Cars theme and Ella can't get enough of Dora the Explorer these days. It should be a lot of fun and I can't wait to show you the progress. The floors are going down today in the apartment so I can start sketching the walls next week.

What We've Been Up To...

I can't believe that it's already September! Where has the summer gone? I guess time slips away when you're working towards something everyday. Entire weeks go by and not much gets finished. Though I'd say we're about 80% done with the apartment by now.

Lately I've been keeping my hands busy with little projects here and there. I've started one of two Shedirs that I'm knitting for some friends before it gets cold. I went to a yarn store while on the Island this week and was hoping to find some Rowan Calmer but they didn't carry it. I wanted to start the hat right away so I settled for some Filatura Di Crosa Zara Solid in a light beige. They didn't have a dark grey that my other girlfriend asked for in Zara but they did in Zarina by the same brand. Zarina is more of a true sport weight rather than the dk that the pattern calls for. After checking my gauge it seemed to be working out so I casted on. After about 3 pattern repeats it's very stretchy and I think it will fit well. Fingers crossed!

My daughter had asked me to make her a blanket for her birthday on October 6th. It might be finished, it might not. I haven't made a granny square blanket since I first started learning how to knit and crochet. I wanted to make this one very special and decided on colors that will grow with her. This is a quick picture taken at night, my white balance is off so the colors might not be as true as I'd like but I'll keep taking pictures as I work on it. Each square is about 3"x 3".

The Fruit Cloths are all knitted up and blocked. All I have to do is take some photos tomorrow morning and design the pdf file. They might be up late tomorrow evening if I can find some help with the kids. Either way they will definitely be availible by Sunday. They are fantastic!

I feel like I've been trying to take on too much, hence the absent posts lately.I have tons to knit for baby showers, birthday gifts and charity. I can't even think about Christmas yet. I think this year I'm strictly going to gift to family. This way I can still find some time to design. I've been working on a calender for 2010 and hopefully a book by the end of next year that will cover knits for the whole family and home. I'm very excited and can't wait to devote some much needed kniting time.

Our family had to take a long drive the other day down to New Jersey and I kept happily busy with this lil' pattern. Easy to design and easy to knit. It was finished in a few hours.

Bottom Flower

CO 6sts arranging 2 on each needle. Join for knitting in the round and place stitch marker being careful not to twist sts.

Finishing
Repeat for all three sizes:

Stuff each layer with scrap yarn or fiberfill and shape into a flattened ball pulling thread so that the top is closed.
Measure out two 12" strands of yarn in a contrasting color.
Thread the tapestry needle with the yarn down the middle of the ball and back up around the side.
Continue going down through the middle and around the side to the top a total of six times pulling tightly to create the flower shape.
Tie a knot around a strand at the top to secure.

Stitch layers to each other and secure yarn. Add a button with some yarn for detail and your done!

August has been such a busy month for us. I'm kinda surprised that I was able to finish these patterns by the end of the week. But I'm very happy with the outcome and I think they are worth the wait. I took my time with everything and I know they will make wonderful gifts for couples everywhere.

A Little Downtime...

We decided to take a weekend road trip with some friends to Pennsylvania over the weekend. We were able to visit family and check out some beautiful scenery. It was a nice break from our tiring routine back at home. I had a memory card malfunction and lost a lot of pictures from our trip but still managed to get a few off the card before it broke.

Somewhere in the north east region of the state we found this wonderful field of wildflowers. I would love to go back one day. It was so remarkably beautiful at twilight that it felt like a dream. The kids and I were able to walk around and play for a while before it became too dark.

There was a beautiful lake where we stayed. Victor and Ella loved watching the people fishing. I wish I could show you the great shots I got but I guess no technology is fail proof. I did manage to move over one picture of the lake at sunset though.

We're planning another trip with our friends before the end of Summer and I'll be sure to take a few memory cards and lots of photos next time.

We're still working on the apartment almost everyday and hoping to be finished and settled in by September. It has been taking forever but we've been building it from scratch by my Mother's so that I can help her out with the house. Being almost ready for paint, I'm so grateful to her and my mother-in-law for all of the babysitting.

On another note, I've been finishing up many patterns. Everything from dishcloths to baby dresses, I'm losing some sleep. I need to photograph the Wedding and Fruit sets tomorrow and start designing the PDF files. By Saturday I should have one of them up. I'm also currently working on a charity pattern for a Lupus foundation. One of my best girlfriends suffers from this disease and we're working together to create something special for the cause.

Birthday Baking...

I haven't made these in awhile even though they are incredibly easy to create. I keep seeing different recipes for variations of the fun treat everywhere. Yesterday I decided to make some simple ice cream themed cakes to celebrate Summer and my Son's third birthday. With the camera out I decided to take some photos and write the process up for anyone who might've not seen them before. You must try them.

The first thing you want to do is pick up any instant cake mix. For these I used Pillsbury Moist Supreme Cake Mix, Golden Butter Recipe. One box of mix will yield around 30-35 cones. Any type of ice cream cone will work as long as it has a flat bottom. I prepared the mix as instructed with the correct amount of water, oil and eggs, then whisked until smooth.

Then you want to fill the cones to the level shown in the picture, any less or more will have your cupcake coming up too short or overflowing the tops of the cones. Carefully spoon in the batter trying not to get any on the outside of the cone because it will burn slightly in the oven. Arrange the cones next to each other on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper so that the bottoms don't brown. I had to use foil because I was out of paper. I think I was able to fit 26 on the tray.

Set your oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Check your cake mix box for timing instructions. I left these in the oven for 20 minutes. Use a toothpick to make sure the centers are baked through. Cool completely for 1 hour.

After cooling I used a pastry icing bag with a long tip and filled them with whip cream. For the chocolate centers I used a milk chocolate fudge.

Using the same icing bag and a different tip I swirled some butter cream and chocolate icing on the tops of the cakes to imitate soft serve ice cream.

The kids had lots of fun decorating the icing. I know my kitchen floor had more sprinkles than all the cakes put together! You can use any topping you wish. We've used gummy bears, pretzels and crushed candy bars on other occasions.

They we're such a big hit at the party. I wish I had hid a few more in the house just for us.

Here's the recipe if anyone wants to copy and paste or print out the selection.

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes:

Prep Time: 20 min
Total Time: 1 hr, 30 min
Yields: 30 to 35 Cupcake Cones

Ingredients:

1 box of cake mix (non swirl)
Water, vegetable oil or butter, eggs and anything else called for on cake mix box
30 or more flat bottom cones
Assorted decorations and toppings

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare cake mix as directed on box.
Fill each cone to about halfway with batter. Stand and arrange cones on a cookie sheet.
Carefully carry tray to oven and bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cupcake comes out clean. Cool completely 1 hour.
Add frosting and decorate to your hearts desire. Store covered at room temperature.

The Beach Cloths...

Wow, I have been so busy this Summer and it's been taking much longer then I had hoped to get all these cloths out. We're still waiting to move as well. Bad experiences with bad contractors have caused us to finish all the work on the apartment ourselves. I am so thankful for my Mother and all the babysitting she's doing. Every day we've been framing, hanging sheetrock, taping, sanding, and laying floors. It's about 70% done but there is still a lot to finish. Hopefully it will be completed by September 1st.

I wish I could just sit at home and knit these patterns up. Though I know when the dust settles there will be better organization and lots of time to wrap up these unfinished patterns. I'll keep everyone posted on what I'm working on. These Beach Cloths we're a nice distraction from all of the construction and headaches I've been having lately.

Dishcloth Q & A...

I've received a lot of emails this year on ways to make my dishcloths and other cloth patterns the best they can be. I figured an easy way to help everyone out was to write up a list of frequently asked questions and add some tips and tricks. Please forgive me if I leave something out. If you have another question, leave a comment on this post and I will add it to the entry.

1. "My dishcloths aren't popping the way they should. Is there anything I can do?"

Yes! There are a lot of different ways to make sure that your cloths look the best. I'm going to go over the basics in this post to ensure that the finished cloth looks great for both gift giving and regular use.

2. "Should I really be using a US size 3 needle?"

Yes and no. It depends on how tight or loose you knit. I knit continental and always use a size 3 needle. I invested in a pair of addi turbos last year for my dishcloth knitting and designing. It was the best decision I made. With the addi's my hands won't hurt and my knitting is faster and significantly more even producing a better defined cloth. If you find that you are unable to knit with a smaller needle or don't have one available, you can use a different size and get a well defined cloth as long as your knitting is very even.

3. "The picture on the cloth is hard to see. I think my knitting is uneven, what can I do?"

If your seeing gaps in between the rows on the wrong or right side of your cloth you might be "rowing out". It's a common problem that affects many knitters. It is most obvious in stockinette or reverse stockinette and is caused when there is a different amount of tension on the yarn while knitting a stitch than while purling a stitch. The fastest way you can correct this problem is to use a different size needle for the knit rows and the purl rows. It may take some time to figure out which two to use though. People generally knit slightly tighter than they purl, but It could be the other way around. You might want to try tightening your stitches on one side or the other to see if there is an improvement. Blocking can also help equalize the tension in the stitches. It might be a few wash and dry sessions before the cloth is completely smooth in the stockinette areas.

I also try to knit an entire cloth in one sitting. I find that if I start and stop a cloth too many times that the stitches pull slightly on the needle for that particular row and create some unevenness when picked back up again. I move my knitting around so much because of the kids. Though I'm sure if it just sat still for awhile there wouldn't be too much of a tension problem.

4. What are the best colors and yarn to use for your dishcloths?"

I tend to use any cotton yarn I have around the house. It's kinda scary exactly how much I have stashed. I should take a picture to show you one of these days. You can use acrylic yarns as well but they are not as absorbent and could scratch some surfaces if you don't pay attention. Wool will obviously pill and felt if washed with hot water.

When it comes to colors your going to see the best results on a medium shade. Very light and dark colors may only show in the right light. Generally with dishcloths or any other picture design if light is directly overhead the picture may be hard to see unless your knitting is very even and the cloth is blocked after use.

5. How do you block your dishcloths?"

After I finish knitting my cloths I weave in all the ends and then soak them in warm water stretching the cloth slightly under the water to even out any tension problems. Then lightly ring out the water trying not to distort the shape too much. I tend to lay the cloths out on my counter top to dry shaping them into squares and pushing down all of the stockinette areas so that the purl bumps stand up. This makes a huge difference! There is no need to pin them and they dry in about an evening. I've only blocked the cloths I keep once or twice and then they go into the washer and dryer with the towels. they come out great every time!

6. What is the best way to photograph the finished cloths?"

After the cloths are blocked and dry I use natural light to my advantage to show the best picture. I will arrange them in front of a sunny window out of direct light. I like to photograph on sunny days to show colors in their true form. Not an easy thing with all of that rain we've been having. You can also use light from a lamp. Just be sure that the light is shining down on an angle from top to bottom to show the shaded areas from the purl bumps. Try to avoid using a flash because this can diffuse the stitch definition of knit and purl stitches.

I always try to take pictures in the morning, around 10am with light shining in from a south window. The later in the day it is, the more likely your colors may come out darker.

A few other things:

Fact: The more use a cloth gets the more the design will "pop" over time.

I actually do use the cloths I make for my kitchen and bathroom. The kids love to play with them in the bathtub and in the backyard. I don't manage to keep many sets though. I always have a reason to gift them.

I use a Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera to photograph all of my cloths.

I find most of my colors in A.C.Moore but I do frequent Michael's and Walmart as well. Sometimes a LYS will have a discontinued color and I'll quickly grab it. You can find most colors online or try the trade or sell feature on Ravelry to see if you can snag a deal.

I design and love every bit of my cloths from drawing up a chart to writing the pattern to knitting, editing the pictures and graphically designing the pdf files from scratch in Adobe Photoshop. Every cloth and pattern is an original design.

There are about 5 or 6 more sets for this year that I'm currently working on and of course, I'm really enjoying them.

I'm sure I forgot a few things but I didn't want to wait any longer to write this up and share some of the questions I get. Again if you have any other questions leave a comment and I'll answer it the best I can.

The Beach Cloths are almost done. Hopefully by the end of the week! I'm also working on a cute little non-dishcloth pattern for everyone.

A Bit of Sun and Chalk...

The weather we've been having may be making us all a little blue, but we're still finding some time to get out and enjoy the warmth. The kids and I played with chalk for a few hours the other day when the sun decided to show his face and dry up the backyard. They both helped me color this little masterpiece.

I have lots of things to post, but not enough time to pull the pictures and words together. I'm sure this happens to a lot of Mom-bloggers. I sometimes find myself writing posts in my head about things that I would love to share. Of course, I never write them down and get stuck at the computer screen as always. Tomorrow, I'll post up another entry about the dishcloths and hope that it helps some of you who may not be getting the best stitch definition.

I apologize for the lateness of this pattern. I've been a little distracted with the move and other family situations. I was really hoping to finish everything earlier. Tragically, we lost our dear friend, John Lanzone, last Tuesday to a bad reaction from prescription drugs. He was only 30 years old and if you can, please say a prayer for his family during this very difficult time.

I've been keeping busy with lots of knitting. From all of this rain we've been having, I've kept the camera hidden. I did knit up the Wedding cloths this week but still need to photograph and create the pdf file.

I think I'm going to start the Beach set next and get that done before the first snow. :0)

For All The Dads In Your Life...

I made this quick knit for my Father-in Law today. It'll be a washcloth that I'm sure he'll get use out of. After the Mother's Day cloth that could be used year round for any occasion you would want to give some knitted love, I decided we could all use this Fatherly one as well. It can be used for birthday's and any other holiday. This pattern is great for beginner knitters and have full easy to follow, line by line instructions.

I'm going to be writing a post in a few days with lots of tips and tricks on dishcloth knitting and ways to photograph, block and get the best stitch definition you possibly can. I just have to gather all my thoughts and write them down.

Summer Cloths!

I'm so happy to finally be able to offer this cloth set. It's taken me a little longer than expected but I've been working on so many things at once. The Wedding, All American, Beach, and Wedding set are coming up next.

I really like the designs I made for this set. It has a little of everything for the season from flip flops to Mai Tai's. There will be more great summer designs in the Beach Set as well.

My son has his first ear infection and we're in the midst of packing everything that we don't need on a daily basis. It has definitely been an interesting week to say the least. I cannot believe how much outgrown clothing I have from my little ones. All of it is probably going to good-will and a few friends that are having babies this year. Between the packing, playing, and insomnia I'm hoping to get a another few sets out before the end of this month. I know a lot of people have been asking when the All-American Set is coming out and I would guess Sunday/Monday if everything goes well this week.

We're Still Here...

To say that I'm a mess right now is an understatement. So many things are happening all at once I'm starting to feel dizzy. Though I wouldn't trade any of it for one second. I had re injured my right eye last weekend and that put me out of commission for the entire week. Alright, maybe that part I wouldv'e traded but everything else has been productive and exciting. The move is still happening by the end of this month and although I should be packing, I really do enjoy a hectic lifestyle. I don't know what I'm going to do after all the dust settles, maybe sleep a little more.

With somewhat limited vision and extra help I had with the kids this week, I managed to get some work started. Knitting was a little strange with the lack of depth perception so I stuck to just charting out some fantastic designs. I've already started writing up some of the patterns and knitting. There will definitely be some wonderful sets of cloths this summer. So far I have added plans of a beach, fruit, dessert and flower set ontop of the wedding, summer, and patriotic ones. I'll be happily busy over the next few months trying to make them all availible.

In the last day or so I have also been working on a pattern for a headband that I'm making for Ella. It is coming out beautifully and I'm going to try and tech edit the pattern to put on my blog for everyone in the next couple days. Right now its just living on crumpled and ripped graph paper.

I have to go back to the doctor next week just to make sure that everything is healing right. They were talking about surgery earlier this week but it turns out they don't want to go the more aggressive route until it happens again. I have what's called recurrent corneal erosion syndrome and I'm not looking forward to more pain when when it tears again. Hopefully with the drops I was prescribed and a more reasonable bedtime, It'll be a long time before another episode.

School Cloths...

Well, my kiddies decided that today would be a great day for 2 and a half hour naps. It allowed me to clean up the living room a little and finish the pdf file for the School/Teacher Cloths. I actually finished the knitting last week but wasn't able to take photos until Sunday. I love this set. I'm actually giving these to a very special teacher in my life. I know she's going to be all smiles when I see her tomorrow.

I'm going to try and get a few more sets out this month while I still have some free time. I'm hoping to finish the "Wedding Set" by next Friday. I'm about halfway through charting the patterns. Some have asked what program I use to put the pattern booklets together. All I really use is a simple cross stitch charting program that lets you click on small boxes to design an image, and photoshop. After I design the images, I write out each picture's pattern, knit them up, block, take photographs and load them into the computer. I really enjoy creating an exciting and original cover page for each pattern set. The rest is all editing text, resizing photos to make sure everything fits on a page to be printed, then adding some extra theme to the pattern. I really hope you enjoy everyone of these sets. A lot of love and creativity goes into each one to make it special. The kids are even starting to get involved when I design the charts. Victor especially loved the Easter set.

Mondays...

We've been having a really busy week over here. I keep trying to create more time out of thin air to accomplish everything but it's not working out too well, I'm tired. The weekends are filled with birthday parties and baby showers, play dates and visits to the park. During the week we go through our normal routines and before I can settle down and breathe a little it's time for bed. I do love being woken up every morning by these two beautiful kids though. I wish they could stay small forever. I already see how fast my daughter has become a little girl. Right now I can't imagine a day when I won't be able to cuddle them on the couch or tuck them into bed. But I'm just a Mom trying to hold on to all the wonderful memories we have as a family.

They really are the best children any Mother could ask for. I'm so thankful that right now I'm able to stay home with Victor and Ella and watch them grow. Lately we've been getting ready to pack for the move next month. This is where most of my time has been going, I'm sure anyone can relate to this kind of headache.

In the evenings I've been working on a School/Teacher set of cloths to put out next. My girlfriend had asked if I could create a set for her to make for her daughter's teacher. After I started charting a few designs I had in my head, I knew they would be perfect for any occasion in the school year. They should be up in the next day or two if I can manage a few hours tomorrow and finish up the pdf file in photoshop. Well, it's time for bed in this house, Have a goodnight everyone.

A Few More Baby Gifts...

It seems like every weekend this month I have another baby shower to go to. I always try to make something special and handmade for the Mom-to-be. While browsing Flickr the other day, I saw this tutorial and decided that it would make the perfect gift for a friend who's having a baby boy in July. I think the outcome was well worth all the cutting and sewing.

It's a pretty straight forward, easy to follow tutorial. I would definitely recommend it if you have some extra time on the weekend. I loved looking through my fabric stash to find matching colors.

You can't tell in the photos but I did add something extra to these adorable blocks. I picked up some round mesh jingle toys from the store and put them in the middle of the fiberfill when I stuffed them. Any baby will love the sounds they make when bounced on the floor.

I think I managed to finish everything in one evening while (not really) watching Disney's Cars in the living room with the kids.

I'm still working steadily on a few more cloth sets for this month. I might even be able to finish everything I hoped for. There's also a lot of exciting things happening around us. One being the fact that our new home will finally be finished next month and I get to pack up all of our belongings and move again. This time it will be permanent and that makes this Mommy very happy.

Baby Cloths!

I'm so happy to have finished these in time for the weekend. Now I can start working on some other very important deadlines. My eye is still healing slowly and everyday my vision is more tolerable and coming back in focus. I cannot express how blessed I felt after reading all of the thoughtful comments and emails I've received from everyone. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

These cloths were such a joy to create and they are going to a very sweet "soon to be" baby girl at the end of this month. I can think of a thousand different uses for them. From bathing to feeding to playing. I might even try making a baby blanket for my daughter using these squares if I have time this year. I hope everyone enjoys knitting and giving these patterns as much as I did.

I made each written pattern with a corresponding chart for the dishcloth. From the sets that I've already made, I've managed to get about 2-2½ cloths out of one ball of Lily's Sugar'n Cream Solid Yarn. Though you can use any kitchen cotton you prefer.

I have a lot of ideas in my head for the rest of this month into June. I'm playing around with some ideas for a Wedding, Teacher, Summer and All American set. I don't know if I'll be able to finish everyone but it's nice to talk about anyway. I'm only going to do a year of cloth sets and then focus more on knitwear for the fall/winter months. I have a book and a few magazine deadlines to work out patterns for so that and some upcoming cloth sets should keep me happily busy through the summer. I would love to hear some feed back on sets that YOU would love to see designed this year.

Mother's Day Cloth...

I apologize for the little hiatus this blog has taken in the past few weeks. I'm only now starting to feel like myself again. While holding my son and talking to a neighbor one afternoon I suffered a severe corneal abrasion when Victor turned his head (and baseball cap) unexpectedly into my right eye. The brim of the cap had torn off all the skin on my cornea. Completely covering my pupil I was instantly unable to see. After a trip to the hospital and follow-up visits with the Optometrist every day for a week, I still have very blurry vision in the affected eye and that could take months to correct itself. I'm slowly getting used to the difference in vision. I'm just thankful that the pain is gone. Apparently the cornea has the most concentrated nerve endings in the entire human body. I wish I didn't have to learn that fact the hard way.

I haven't been on the computer that much lately but everyday it's getting easier to read and do more work online. I couldn't resist at least trying to get a finished cloth out for Mother's Day. There are several days left if you still need to make something extra for Mom on her day. Hope everyone will enjoy this cloth. It's a fun pattern that you can make year round just to show how much you appreciate everything she does.

While staring at my enormous stash last week all I could think to myself was, "What am I going to do with all this cotton?". It really is taking over the craft room and all the baskets that I keep my yarn in. I can't seem to resist the beautiful colors that our local stores carry. I will always knit dishcloths but what about the left overs that will never make up a whole cloth? I've had this idea in my head for quite some time now. I think I attempted making one about two years ago but with new babies and having to move it was left unfinished. Needing a break from the sweater I'm currently working on, I sat down and wrote up the pattern for everyone. My son and I had fun trying to come up with a name.

Everyone I know loves knitting for their pets. This is a fast and easy to follow pattern that uses simple increases and decreases then seaming up with mattress stitch. Great for a beginner that is looking to practice some shaping. I know I'll be making a few for Christmas this year. The pattern is also easily adaptable for larger dogs. Just add more stitches to the cast on areas and then increase the number of rows that you knit in plain stockingnet stitch for a longer bone.

Pattern: Fetch !

Needles: US Size #6, 4.0mm

Yarn: Lily's Sugar'n Cream
or any other kitchen cotton yarn.

Materials: Fiber fill or scrap yarn for stuffing,
Tapestry Needle
Strong yarn for seaming up.
( I used Patons Grace )
Scissor

Pattern: (Make 2)

CO 6sts

Row 1: K all sts
Row 2 (WS) and all even rows : P all sts
Row 3: Kfb, K4, Kfb (8 sts)
Break yarn and push sts back to end of needle.

CO 6sts on other needle.
Repeat rows 1-3 but don't break the yarn.
You should now have both pieces on one needle. Slide them together and P all sts (16 sts)
(*Tip: After purling the first 8 sts Grab the tail yarn (from the next piece) with the working yarn and P 1 st, this will secure it. Then drop the tail yarn and continue the row with working yarn. Be sure to treat that stitch as one on the next (RS) row.

Rows 7-10: (K one row, P one row) (2x)

Row 11: K1, SSK, K10, K2tog, K1
Row 13: K1, SSK, K8, K2tog, K1
Row 15: K1, SSK, K6, K2tog, K1
Row 17, K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1

Rows 19-30: Purl the 6 sts that were just worked.

Row 45: K 6 sts
Row 46: P 6 sts

Row 47: BO 6 sts, Break yarn.

Join yarn to remaining sts on (RS) and repeat rows 43-47.

Finishing:

Place both sides together wrong sides facing. With strong yarn thread tapestry needle and begin mattress stitching the sides and using a shoulder seam for joining the two halves together for the ends of the bone This video from Berroco might help if you get stuck. (I started seaming about half an inch down from the top right corner and continued counter-clockwise.) Once you have about 2" left begin stuffing the bone with fiberfill or scrap yarn. Finish seaming and secure ends. Pull thread through and cut with scissors from other side to hide it.

Organic Cotton Bunnies...

I finished these little guys the other day to put in the kids baskets along with the toys and candy they're getting from the Easter Bunny. I've had to hide them in the meantime so they don't hop off somewhere. The whole house has been buzzing today while everyone is getting ready for tomorrow. We're cooking, cleaning, baking and getting ready to paint some Easter eggs. Oh, and I have to shop for Ella's shoes later because she's outgrown her dressy ones. Hopefully the stores will still be open by the time I'm able to get out.

For this particular pattern I followed the knitting instructions as written. The result was adorable, but I wanted the bunnies to be able to "stand". I took about 12 pennies and taped them together for a weight. Then I placed them on top of the stuffing before I seamed the bottoms closed. I added a pom pom, embroidered black eyes and swiss darned a pink nose. Now they are ready to play with each other tomorrow morning.

I should get back to cleaning now. I meant to post last night but we were all too exhausted by the time we got home from our friends house. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Easter tomorrow!

Mom Always Gives In..

We've been thinking about getting the kids a pet for awhile now. A dog would be a wonderful addition to the family. It's what we all want, but it's a bit too much at the moment. Especially If we're going to be moving soon.

Victor is infatuated with the movie Finding Nemo. I'm sure other Mothers can relate as well. He'll watch it every night before bed. With this in mind we stopped in the pet store on the way home from food shopping the other day. After five seconds in the store he asked, "Mommy, can I have a fish, please?" I couldn't say no. He got to pick out the one he wanted and we brought "Nemo" home. So far he's been a very responsible 2yr old, remembering to feed the fish everyday. He even helped me change the water this morning. It's truly amazing to watch my son becoming a boy before my very eyes.

Naptime...

It's rare that both my kids will voluntarily go down for naps at the same time. At 2 and 1 yrs of age they get sneaky and trick me into thinking they're both sleeping until I start some chores. Then one will run out of the room, make a mess and hang out for an hour. Then fall asleep as soon as the other is wide awake and tearing up the house. They are best friends (for now) though and I couldn't be happier about that.

My son has been playing with the baby chick cloth from the Easter set from the moment it came off my needles. I saw this adorable Drops pattern the other night on Ravelry and decided to make it for him to carry around. Instant happiness, he's named it "chicken ducks". It was a very quick easy pattern that I actually started and finished during naptime yesterday so I had to share this with you.

The only things I changed with the pattern were using kfb instead of the yo's for increases and using a felt beak instead of crocheting one with the suggested embroidery thread. I might make another to give as a gift for my friends daughter. I'm sure she would love to carry it around as well.

Babies..Babies...

They're everywhere these days, how could you not smile. It seems like every week there's something to knit or sew for another baby shower or welcoming gift and I'm perfectly alright with this. Last week I had heard of another baby shower and started the hunt for something sweet and memorable for the new arrival and his family.

Browsing through Ravelry late one night as I normally do, I spotted a perfect tiny design and decided to jump on the "owl-bandwagon". After seeing all of the beautiful sweaters that were made from the Owls pattern by Kate Davies I wanted the finished look but an adult sweater was too much of a commitment last month.

Pattern: Owl Baby Vest by Jodi Haraldson
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease in Stone and Lake
Needles: US #5 3.75mm
Gauge: 22 stitches & 30 rows to 4"

I finished the vest in a day and it's already wrapped and ready to go for next week. I made a few changes to the pattern. I made a 0-3 month size by omitting one of the cabled owls in the pattern and going up one needle size. The finished circumference is 16" with a height of 9". I left out buttons for the eyes and embroidered them instead with the trim color.

I'm very happy with how this turned out and how fast it was knitting in the round for a newborn. Lately I've been attempting to use up most of my stash yarn that's been sitting for too long. I haven't used these colors for at least a year. It's a good thing I keep everything in ziploc bags.

On another note I should have everything finished for the Easter Cloths by Monday the latest. Thank you so much to everyone for all of your support. Art and design have always been my life and I feel so blessed to be able to share it with you.

Stash Update...

I finally took a trip with some great friends into Manhattan yesterday to Knitty City . The trip was long overdue but just what I needed to break up the work week. I needed to find the perfect color in Cascade 220 to knit up a bag that I'm in the middle of designing. I ended up falling in love with a beautiful shade of Baby Rose Heather #9442. I was quick to grab enough yardage and keep moving.

I kept passing by the Malabrigo yarns beside the register and ended up buying the first skein of laceweight I picked up. I wanted a delicate color that would suit something I have in mind for the summer. This one reminded me of a cremesicle. I believe the color is Kettle Dyed Solid # 72 Apricot. Honeslty, who isn't in love with this yarn?

Lastly I wanted to pick up enough yarn to work out a pattern for a lacey shrug I'm working on. I wanted a somewhat neutral color that would work over a pale camisole or dress. I decided on Koigu Premium Merino Semi Solids in a wonderful light shade of brown #1303 dye lot #34. I can't wait to give these my full attention.

This morning was back to normal with the kids as usual. Though I had lots of new yarn to play with at naptime, and I just couldnt help myself. Hopefully I'll have enough time this week to finish everything I have on my agenda. Now, I'm excited for some springtime knitting.

Taking A Break...

That title might be a little misleading though. We all need to take breaks from time to time to balance work and family. I however needed a break the other day from my regular knitting and pattern writing to just sit in front of the TV with my kids and work up a mindless garter bib for a friends baby. The outcome was too cute for words. I had found some mystery gray cotton/acrylic yarn at my Mother's last week and took it home instead of letting it sit for a for another year. I think it became something quite lovely.

I'ts a very simple and generic bib pattern. Using US size 6 needles I cast on 40 sts and knit in garter for about 6". Then bound off 30 sts and continued in garter for around 9-10" adding a yarn over button hole a few rows before I bound those stitches off. Sewed a Button in the correct place then traced and cut a felt whale and embroidered it on. Start to finish with the applique it took me under 2 hrs, but I tend to knit very fast when I'm distracted by television.

I'm really going to make it a point to start updating more often. So many projects make it off my needles before I ever get a chance to photograph and share them with you. I've been lacking a bit in the sleep department lately, but that happens when I try and do too much at once. It seems I never truly stop working. I'm sure any Mother will say that, and with love too.

Spring Cloths

There's no denying that springtime is here. It's getting warmer by the day and the trees are starting to bud. So of course I had to design another cloth set. It was the perfect excuse to head out and buy some more beautiful cotton colors. I swear these look like candy.

I always tend to have a favorite design in each of the sets but I just can't pick one this time. From designing the charts to knitting up the finished cloths each one was perfect. I hope you will enjoy them just as much as I did.

I've been a busy bee myself these days. I have lots of patterns in the works at the moment. Between that and being a full time mom I'm a bit overwhelmed. But everyday gives me the creative outlet to have fun and enjoy every moment of parenting.

At the moment I'm currently working on Easter cloths and a spring bag design that is turning out beautifully. I can't want to finish the pattern. Hoping everyone is well and enjoying the "better" weather we've been having.

**I just love the ideas that some of you are having with these and posting on Ravelry and twitter. I think using a bigger needle lets say a US #6 or 7 and any worsted weight yarn that can be blocked would make a spectacular baby blanket. I might have to pick up some soft wool and try this myself. I know someone who's expecting this summer and it would be perfect!**

St. Patrick's Day Cloths...

I would've had these up much sooner if everyone in the house hadn't come down with the stomach flu one right after the other. Talk about a stressful week. Everyone is feeling better finally. I hear there's a few bugs going around. On another note I'm still having major issues with organization. My home office is a mess, (I'll show you one of these days) I can't seem to find a work routine that makes everyone happy. If I crack down and finish up the next design then I should have the spring cloths up sometime next week. I'm crossing my fingers.

The larger cloth is sized at 10"x10". It knit up beautifully and the shamrocks came out just how I wanted. I haven't done a regular sized dishcloth in awhile and decided it was about time. This one is perfect for my kitchen right now. Though I'm tempted to give it away as a gift.

The smaller cloths measure approximately 5½"x 5½". They're an extremely fast knit. Especially if your just looking for something to start while your watching a TV program and get a FO before it's over.

For the hanging loop on the larger cloth I did something a little different this time. When binding off the final row I left 3 remaining stitches and knitted an I-cord for 3". Then I binded them off and sewed the end of the cord to the underside of the cloth where the I-cord started. I loved the look of it and how sturdy it was. I'm going to use this as my loop method from now on.

Mondays Are Long Days.

Everything is back to the normal routine around here. The holidays that kept friends and family from work or school are gone and It's just me with the kids again. I don't mind spending the time with my children, in fact I cherish it and I'm thankful that I can be here to watch them grow everyday. Though after a fun filled week with lots of friends and late bedtimes Monday did sneak up on me. I'm swimming in laundry, cleaning, toys and work and it's going to take me all week to catch up.

Right now I'm working on two free St. Patrick's Day cloths for everyone. I designed a larger cloth and a matching smaller scrubber as well. Hopefully I'll have everything up in a day or two so there will be plenty of time to make them for March 17th.

I took some time to myself last week to knit a few things for baby showers that keep popping up. My Mom's boss and a friend's cousin are both having baby boys next month and as soon as I take the pictures out of my camera I'll post them up.

Spring has been calling to me, even though the temperatures haven't. We've been stuck in this house for too long. I don't have the car during the day so if we need to get out for something it takes about half an hour just to locate everything to bundle up and walk out the door. Hopefully March won't bring too much snow, I'm ready for June.

I'll leave you with Ella's "I didn't do it." face. This little baby cracks me up to no end. Hopefully she'll leave you all with a smile as well.

Citrus...

It feels so great to finally get these mittens out. I was hoping for a January pattern release but with the kids and other family issues it just wasn't possible. I've been working on the pattern for these since the end of December and I'm so pleased with how they turned out. It's truly amazing to have an idea and then make it come full circle as a finished wearable accessory. I'm in love with stranded colorwork at the moment so these were a lot of fun to knit up.

If you've never tried any standed colorwork or traditional fair isle knitting before, there is a great video you might want to check out here. I use the traditional two-handed fair isle technique and knitted these mittens on two circular needles.

I knitted a size small to fit my hands

These mittens will be an ultra warm treat for anyone as the finished fabric is thicker than knitting with one yarn. They also have a traditional double thickness internal cuff.
Great for intermediate and advanced beginner knitters as the charts and instructions are easy to follow. Knitted in the round, using DPN’s or circular needles. Sizing is achieved by changing needle size and gauge.

Sizes
Women’s Small (Medium)
For additional length or width change the needle size. Knit Picks’ Palette yarn is on the lighter side of fingering weight. For a larger mitten go up a needle one size or use a lightly thicker fingering weight yarn. For a smaller mitten use a smaller needle. As with any pattern be sure to check your gauge first!

Finished Measurements for Small
After Blocking, Palm Circumference: 8"
Length: 8½" From bottom of cuff to top of mitten

Set of 4 or 5, 2.5 mm/US 1 double pointed needles (2.75/US 2 for larger mitten) or a 32" or longer circular needle, or two circular needles.

Birthday Cake and Messy Babies...

Today the kids and I made a birthday cake for their Dad's birthday. Lil' Victor helped me the whole way, mixing the batter and pouring it into the pan. He even managed to frost most of the cake with my guidance. It wasn't the prettiest cake we've ever made but I think they had more fun eating it.

I know I haven't posted in awhile. We've all been keeping busy in the house and possibly moving again so thats where most of my free time is going. Right now I'm working on a design for a pair of stranded colorwork mittens that I hope to get out before winter's over. I am also going to try for a spring set of cloths in the next few weeks. Hope everyone is doing well.

Daytime. Every second is spent protecting and teaching my children as we go through our routines. One thing is certain though. They love Mommy's stash. It's quite common to find yarn unraveled running from one side of the house to the other. Or to hear them playing drums with needles that I've been looking for. Yesterday my son had a fake snowball fight with fiberfill he found in my desk. They'll sit on the couch and play next to me while I work on patterns or knit up gifts for friends. I hope they never get tired of being so curious or creative.

I had hoped to get these out last week but with everyone getting sick again and Ella's teething it just wasn't possible. I had originally made these for a friend's new apartment but when my mother saw them I had to let her keep them. I loved every second of creating these cloths.

I made each written pattern with a corresponding chart for the dishcloth. From the sets that I've already made, I've managed to get about 2-2½ cloths out of one ball of Lily's Sugar'n Cream Solid Yarn. Though you can use any kitchen cotton you prefer.

I wanted to answer a few questions that I frequently get through email.
To get the best stitch definition out of your cloths I recommend using a smaller needle size, no bigger than a US #6, 4mm. I use a US #3, 3.25mm Addi Turbo to knit all of my cloths. I also recommend blocking your cloth by soaking it in water for a few seconds and then gently squeezing out excess water until it is damp. Shape your cloth into a square with your hands and lay flat pushing down the stockinette stitches to dry. This should help your cloth's pattern really "pop". When photographing them for your blog or Ravelry try and use natural light whenever possible. Or use light from a table lamp shown from the top of the cloth down towards the bottom to create shadows from the different stitches. Hope this helped a little. Although I'm longing for some sun I can't help but love the beauty that is Winter. I took my camera out the other day and had a little fun around my neighborhood.

It seems that all we're doing these days is shoveling or throwing some salt down. We haven't had a big snowstorm yet, just a few inches here or there. I know my son would love to have enough snow to jump in. Ella has another cold. Or maybe it's more teeth coming in. But every night like clock work the fever spikes up again.

I'm still playing around with some new patterns, graphic editing and test knitting is what goes on for most of the week during my free time. Thankfully I'm used to cleaning up as I go or this house would be atrocious! Valentine's Day Cloths are just days away from being published. For the spring I'm dreaming of dyeing yarn again. I made some beautiful colorways last year and it's all I've been thinking about as of late. I might even attempt to make enough to sell. I really need to set up my etsy one of these days.

Home for the Holiday's...

When I came across this fabric doll house tutorial in December I knew instantly that I would have to give it a go. I also knew exactly whom I was going to make it for. It honestly took only about a day and a half between cutting the materials and then assembling them by machine and hand. I had so much fun playing with the design that I'll probably make another for my little girl when she turns 2 later this year.

Sarah got this for Christmas with her smaller dolls in mind. She loves it, maybe even more than I do. It was hard to part with but I'm sure it will go even faster the second time around. I increased the size of the dollhouse from the 4"x 6" size in the tutorial to around 10"x 12". I used plastic canvas mesh and batting taped around the edges as it was suggested to keep from slipping inside the pieced fabric. I appliquéd the windows, doors and greenery motif with a basic slip stitch. Using only stash fabric I was able to stay true to Sarah's "mostly purple" rule.

I love working with felt and the creative process that this took. I would highly recommend trying it on a weekend if you have some patience. I'm sure everyone knows a special little girl or two that would deserve such a timeless gift. If you want to see more pictures of the doll house click to see my flickr album.

Zodiac Cloths...

I've been trying to finish these since November but the holidays got in the way every time. I had hoped to make it by New Years but they're only a few weeks late. I really like how they turned out and have been gifted to lots of family and friends. These would be great for gifts year round and I can see making more cloths for upcoming birthday's.

Disappearing Act...

This might be the first year that we've actually taken the Christmas tree down on time. I feel somewhat liberated to pack the holidays away and wait for more pleasant seasons to come. The temperature in New York has become frighteningly chilly and the kids and I don't venture out too much these days. I'm already longing for brisk walks to the park. Watching the trees begin to bloom and the warming sun. Though we're going to have a bit of a snowstorm in our area tonight, I've already turned the heat up and I'm grateful for all the winter knitting surrounding me.

A few designs and cloth sets that I'm trying to work out for this month have been completely dominating my free time. With so much going on otherwise I've fallen behind on emails, (and laundry), an I owe a few apologies. I will get to them within the next two days I promise. For everyone who has asked if I plan to do more Cloth sets the answer is yes! I'm going to attempt to design every season and major holiday for the full year. Baby and wedding themed sets are also in the queue.

I haven't uploaded any pictures from Christmas or New Years yet. I'm so behind everywhere, but I do have one gift to share that I made for my friend's baby girl.

A New Year...

I was asked earlier this month to design a cloth for a small knitting group that meets locally. They wanted something for the new year that was small enough to be knitted multiple times to give as teacher's gifts. I thought this was a perfect choice for the mini cloth. It stands at only 5½"x5½" and most will be able to make one in about one to two hours. Such a fast knit it's addictive. If you've purchased one of my pattern sets then you'll know how fun and fast they are. I had to share this with everyone to celebrate the holiday's.

Thermis...

I've been meaning to publish this neck warmer design for quite awhile now. I'm glad to finally have had some time this month to write up the pattern. I love this design and it's a fast gift idea, knitting up in a day or two. I'll probably try to knit a few more before Christmas as most of my friends have hinted they want one this year.

This stylish unisex cowl with a thermal stitch pattern will keep the wind out on those chilly days and nights. It's half buttoned opening gives just the right amount of room when you need it.

Thermis is an easy to follow pattern knitted in Patons Classic Wool Merino worsted weight yarn for outstanding warmth and flexibility. Its versatile look will go with any wardrobe feeling comfortable without adding a lot of bulk. There are instructions for two different sizes that will fit men and a women. You can however use any worsted weight yarn of your choice, just make sure to check your gauge before you start the pattern.

There's just something about December snow. It's chilling, swirling, beautiful nature. I wait patiently for this time of year when you can sit curled up on the couch with blankets and hot chocolate. Watching the patterns dance in the streetlights. I'm completely in love with the first of winters snowfall.

Handmade Holidays...

So I managed to snap a few photos of my handmade ornaments this year before Grandma came by and claimed them today. I make a couple every year for her. I always love playing with felt and it takes on such a personality with whatever you create. There are a couple tutorials around the web for making these ornaments but I'll just write what I did as I didn't really follow any pattern.

Cookie Cutter Ornaments:

Materials:

Any Cookie Cutter of your choice
Marker
Scissor
Different colored sheets of felt
Approx. 4ft of embroidery thread per ornament
Embroidery Needle
Ribbon
Buttons and or Beads
Fiberfill
Sewing Tread and needle (for beads and buttons)

Instructions:

Trace a cookie cutter onto some felt and cut two identical pieces.
Sew on some buttons or beads and embroider tiny faces if desired.
Pin the two pieces together and begin blanket stitching all the way around starting on the left side of the waist front side facing up.
After stitching both legs and the right side near the the top, feed in an inch or two of festive ribbon doubled in a loop. Pass the embroidery needle and thread through all layers of felt and ribbon a few times to secure.
Keep blanket stitching until there are a few inches left.
Remove the pin and stuff some fiber fill into your gingerbread man or any other design and blanket stitch closed.
Secure all ends and cut any loose threads.
Step back and admire these cuties.

My kids love them so much. They've become a favorite with my family when I made them last year. You can make quite a few of them in an evening if you really sit down and get into a groove. I kept losing my needle only to find it in the couch again.. and again. If you have any questions I'll answer them in the comments.

Holiday's Are For Crafting...

I'm waiting for someone to tell me they can stop time. Two weeks till Christmas and there appears to be no end in sight. I have tons of shopping to do. We're not having Christmas dinner at our house this year but theres still a lot to prepare for. I wanted to make a whole bunch of ornaments to give as gifts this year but running short of time, it's not going to happen. I did manage to make several adorable felt gingerbread men but I haven't taken the camera out yet. Hopefully I can get some pictures before my mother grabs them for her tree.

How is everyones gifting going? Have you finished all of the holiday knitting and shopping you wanted to do this year? I'm sure I'm not the only one who leaves it to the last minute.

I've been meaning to post an update with the different colors that I used on the Christmas Cloths. I apologize if you were waiting for them. Our Internet connection has been rather unstable as of late and it's kept me from posting and answering emails all week. Everything is fixed now and I have some projects I'll blog about tomorrow and later this week.

3 Weeks Left...

The holiday's are full blown over here. I've decided to make handmade gifts for most of my family and friends and my list keeps growing. I can see why most people start everything earlier in the year for this reason. I'm not worried, but it's going to be close. There are also three different patterns in the works. One more cloth pattern set for this year, a free cloth pattern for 2009, and something entirely different that I'm in love with.

Our family took a trip up to Pennsylvania this weekend to spend time with friends. It was relaxing to get away from the house for a few days. I even had some time to teach my girlfriend (who's now hooked on addi-turbos) and a 9yr old girl how to knit. I'm so proud of you Kat! I can only hope that when my daughter is old enough she will be just as enthusiastic about knitting.

I'm teaching tomorrow and have to work out the lesson plan and print some guides for my students. Maybe we'll stop by the store later, I still have to pick up some different colors for the next set.

I took these shots on Thanksgiving. Ella is still in the stage of wanting to have her photograph taken. My son runs away at the very sight of the camera. But every now and then you can sneak one in when hes not looking. My silly boy and the magic of ice cream.
